What to Expect from Individualized Science Tutoring at Open Door Education

From Earth Science to AP Physics to Organic Chemistry, Science classes teach students to think and act methodically while deepening their understanding of the world around them – and they can also be extremely challenging! If your student is having difficulty in their Science class, Open Door tutors can help them to master the content they need to know while also developing the thinking patterns and the confidence that will prepare them for each new challenge they will encounter. First we will work to understand how to best support your student, then we will connect them with a great-fit tutor who will partner with them to set and achieve meaningful goals in their journey towards academic success.

Academic Subjects in Science

Overview and Introduction

Earth Science helps students to understand the beautiful complexity of the world around them, broadening and deepening their understanding of the science behind a wide range of phenomena, from weather to tectonic plates to the natural cycles that make life possible. The challenge of Earth Science is that it covers so much content, but when students comprehend it, they can develop an appreciation for science that lasts a lifetime.

What to Expect

Your student’s tutor will help to break down complex concepts into their simple, intuitive components. With the aid of visual guides, mnemonic devices, and memorable examples, students are equipped to not only thrive in Earth Science but also to use effective study habits that will help them succeed throughout their STEM coursework.

How It Works

Most students meet with their tutor for a one-hour session each week, though that can vary according to a student’s particular needs. Earth Science tutoring sessions are designed to be collaborative and interactive, while also ensuring that students develop essential content mastery. Over time, students build good study habits and become increasingly independent, while knowing that they still have a strong support system that will keep them on track.
The Earth is what we all have in common.

Wendell Berry

Overview and Introduction

Biology, the study of life itself, calls on students to apply a range of academic skills, from rote memorization of terminology and structures to an understanding of complex systems and the ways in which they interact with one another. When your student is taking biology, they are not only learning important concepts but also developing academic skills that will support their long term success.

What to Expect

Your student’s tutor will not only help them to understand and appreciate the material itself but also support them in developing effective study habits that will be essential for the many complex, content-heavy classes ahead of them.

How It Works

In the early stages, your student will work with their tutor to identify the concepts and processes that are most difficult for them. Over time, they will collaboratively develop both the content knowledge and the academic skills that will help them to be successful in Biology as well as the rigorous Science courses to follow.
Biology is the science. Evolution is the concept that makes biology unique.

Jared Diamond

Overview and Introduction

Chemistry introduces an unfamiliar system of notation, has many technical terms and numbers to remember, and uses advanced diagrams – all of which can be intimidating to students, regardless of their confidence in previous sciences.

What to Expect

Students will learn how to deal with complex, difficult to grasp concepts with the help of our Chemistry tutors. Students will work with their tutor to repeatedly practice the process of applying each concept in order to build their confidence and achieve Chemistry mastery.

How It Works

Students meet with their tutors for collaborative, interactive 60 minute sessions, usually once-a-week. No matter what level they’re starting at, whether they need additional help to grasp core concepts of Chemistry problem solving or want to get a head start on advanced concepts, we will pair them with the right tutor to help them succeed.
Chemistry begins in the stars. The stars are the source of the chemical elements, which are the building blocks of matter and the core of our subject.

Peter Atkins

Overview and Introduction

Though math skills are important in all the sciences, no one topic combines the two subjects like Physics. Students taking Physics need a strong grounding in Algebra, Calculus, Geometry, and Trigonometry in order to master the equations that make up so much of the topic. A clear understanding of the fundamental concepts of Physics is essential for success and will prepare students for more advanced material down the line.

What to Expect

Students will learn the skills and build the confidence they need to succeed on homework assignments, classwork and tests. Students will work with their tutors to understand where they make mistakes in order to avoid those mistakes on test day..

How It Works

Our Physics tutoring approach models the full range of problems that students must be prepared to solve, ensuring success in the classroom, in tests, and beyond. Students meet tutors for 60 minute sessions, typically on a weekly basis. Sessions can revolve around a difficult homework assignment, introducing students to more advanced challenges, or preparing them for the next stage of the topic.
The study of physics is also an adventure. You will find it challenging, sometimes frustrating, occasionally painful, and often richly rewarding.

Hugh D. Young

Overview and Introduction

Few topics are as pressing or complex as Environmental Science. From understanding the nitrogen and oxygen cycles to conducting intricate unit conversions, students must learn many discrete topics and then understand how they intersect with one another, which requires advanced systems thinking. While the course is challenging, it is essential to any student who aspires to solve our most important challenges.

What to Expect

Your student’s tutor will first work to understand what your student needs and how they best learn, developing an effective working relationship and to help your student succeed throughout the class. Over time, your student will become more confident with the material and begin to see the bigger picture, and their tutor will help them to gain perspective on the interconnectedness of the many units of Environmental Science.

How It Works

Open Door’s approach supports students right from the start by addressing their most pressing needs, then working to build consistent habits that are conducive to success. Your student has a consistent guide to help ensure that they stay on track, and as they become more effective, their tutor will help them to think critically and carefully about the intersection of their class content and the world around them.
The environment is where we all meet; where we all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing all of us share.
