Learning a foreign language is one of the most impactful ways your student can broaden their world and expand their opportunities. When your student studies Spanish, they are not only learning a language that allows them to communicate with a wider range of people, they are also learning important lessons about grammar and structure as well as culture and history, all while making themselves a more compelling candidate when it comes time for college admissions.

What to Expect

When your student works with a Spanish tutor, they will not only learn and practice important vocabulary and conjugations, they will also learn how to study more effectively and how to plan ahead for projects and papers so that they are better prepared for the increasing challenge of each new year of Spanish.

How It Works

Spanish tutoring covers a range of skills. Early on, your student’s tutor will work to understand their strengths and identify their challenges while also addressing any urgent priorities, from studying for an upcoming quiz to completing a challenging packet. Over time, your student will gain significant practice conversing in Spanish and improve their confidence in both speaking and listening so that they are better prepared for real-life application of their knowledge and skills.

Learning about conjugations, tenses, and relative pronouns in French deepens your student’s understanding of language as a whole and helps them to be more effective in picking up additional languages in the future.

What to Expect

Your student’s French tutor will help them master the fundamental rules of French, from understanding masculine and feminine prefixes to conjugating in the pluperfect tense – a necessary skill in French writing and speaking. In addition to practicing writing and conversing in French, your student will learn effective study skills that can help them to learn any language.

How It Works

Regular practice is important when learning a new language, so most students meet with their tutor once a week for a 60-minute session to continue making progress together. Your student’s tutor will lead helpful, collaborative, and engaging sessions that help students improve their results in French while gaining a new appreciation for the language.

What to Expect

Your student’s tutor will be an experienced German speaker who will help them practice both listening to and speaking German during sessions, helping your student to become more skilled and confident in their German. From learning the grammatical structures to memorizing unfamiliar vocabulary, your student’s tutor will help your student to improve their results in the short term and learn to be more effective students in the long run.

While Latin is considered to be a dead language, it is relevant to so much of modern language as it provides a foundation for understanding modern grammar and structure. Latin is also an unparalleled tool for recognizing the origins of and relationships between words, as Latin roots and prefixes are ubiquitous in English.

What to Expect

From memorizing vocabulary to mastering the many challenging declensions, your student is developing strong academic skills when they take on the challenge of Latin, and their tutor will help them to succeed on their quest, regardless of experience level. Your student will practice translating text, learn skills for effective memorization, and gain a deeper understanding of the history and culture that are part of the study of Latin.

How It Works

Each student learns language differently, and your student’s tutor will help your student to understand and master the approach that helps them to be most successful. While your student may need help catching up and improving their grades during their first few sessions, over time they will become more confident and skilled, working ahead of or beyond the curriculum in learning to apply their Latin knowledge to modern day English words.

A UMass Amherst graduate with a degree in Applied Mathematics, Tim started his career teaching high school math and physics. He continued teaching in a Job Corps program, as well as mixing in some private tutoring. While the majority of Tim’s career has been in high tech as a software and systems engineer, he never strayed far from his teaching roots — always mentoring younger engineers and sharing his expertise whenever possible. Tim’s teaching style is primarily Socratic — engaging in questions and conversation rather than solely explaining topics. He believes the tutoring process is a partnership in which both parties grow and learn. Tim spends his free time caring for his wife’s growing herd of horses, as well as trying, with intermittent success, to improve his golf game.
